Smart vending machines are the new challenge for manufacturers, producers and distributors:

Venditalia is helping the industry evolve.

Milan, 22nd March 2018. Vending machines have always been part of everyday life. And they have evolved together with the needs of an ever-wider user base, to bring the capabilities of today's technologies, which make these systems increasingly "intelligent" and efficient. An incredible evolution, which over just a few decades has changed our habits and is destined to keep changing them.

The smart vending machines that can be manufactured today represent the current challenge for all players in the supply chain – for manufacturers, who find themselves needing to offer increasingly efficient and versatile models, even from the point of view of intelligent electronics; for producers of consumer goods, who are having to anticipate the new opportunities offered through a "classic" distribution channel that is experiencing significant innovation; and finally for managers, who will be able to invest in new business models dedicated to the final customer, with these distributors finding these smart vending machines to be faithful and reliable "partners".

Smart vending machines are facing an important and fast-moving market; today, after the main utilities – electricity, gas and water – the most prevalent facilities being installed are the 2.5 million coffee machines and vending machines selling countless other products that can now be found everywhere. Italian vending is inextricably linked to the three professional key players in the market: manufacturers, producers and managers.

These are the very people who will be attending fieramilanocity from 6th-9th June 2018 at Venditalia, the most important international event for automatic vending services. The event, organised by Venditalia Servizi and promoted by Confida – an Italian association for the vending machine industry – is the most important showcase event in the world for the industry, and capable of attracting over 20,000 visitors in total throughout the event.

The exhibition will be above all an opportunity to talk about the future of vending services, which will grow from a present that is full of opportunities and a past of great progress.

In Italy, vending machines have been cropping up since 1963. The world of "vending", a word which we have taken from the English term that identifies what in Italy we call the automatic distribution channel, is one of Italy's great excellences. Italy is the world market leader thanks to the main manufacturers of vending machines, dispensing machines and payment systems, prestigious brands of products (think "made in Italy" coffee) and service management companies, who have modern and innovative business models.

What has changed since 1963? First of all, dispensing machines have become more efficient, having gone from accepting only small coins, to banknotes and then keys. However, what has really made the difference for the vending machine industry in recent years is the fact that these dispensers have become "smart".

The future of the sector is linked to a simple mechanism that will guarantee an increasingly instant service, thanks to internet connection. In fact, a machine can communicate in real time with a centralised management system, reporting on its operation, which products have been sold, the status of its stock and even the payments received. In addition, the new smart automatic dispensers are equipped with various sensors that can keep track of the temperature inside the machine or detect any malfunctions in the delivery of the product. These features also greatly facilitate the organisation of maintenance and servicing. For example, the ability to know when to go to a specific customer to fix a problem or to arrange restocking makes this process more efficient and, obviously, cheaper. The internet also allows payments with credit cards or other payment systems that require a real-time verification, but not only this – it also makes it possible, for example, to choose the product via a smartphone, pay and withdraw the products purchased at the nearest available vending machine.

What and how many services can be offered through this increasingly widespread system? Some of the possible answers to these questions will come up at the next Venditalia event. The best insights are destined to write new chapters of a story full of great entrepreneurial ideas and evolving habits.
